Sharjeel Memon slams Punjab govt for politicizing flood victims’ suffering

Karachi, October 6: Sindh Senior Minister and Provincial Minister for Information, Transport, and Mass Transit Sharjeel Inam Memon has strongly criticized the Punjab Information Minister for what he termed as a “shameful politicization” of flood victims’ misery. Reacting to the Punjab minister’s recent press conference, Memon said it was deplorable that instead of extending real help, the Punjab government was focused on media optics and political point-scoring.

In an official statement, Sharjeel Memon said, “Our demand is clear and straightforward — provide genuine assistance to the flood victims rather than indulging in press conferences and photo sessions.” He said that the people of South Punjab were desperately appealing for help, but the government’s response had been limited to taking pictures and issuing statements. “Please put the cameras aside and go to the people who need you the most,” he urged.

Highlighting the difference between the two provinces’ responses, Memon stated that while no concrete work was visible in Punjab, the Sindh government was actively rebuilding lives. “No houses are being built in Punjab, nor are solar panels being distributed. Only speeches are being delivered. In contrast, the Sindh government is constructing 2.1 million houses and providing solar panels to affected families. Our work embarrasses them,” he said.

The minister went on to criticize the Punjab government’s token gestures, saying, “We don’t distribute Rs. 300 packets with our photos printed on them just to include Rs. 120 worth of chips and juice. That is the difference between genuine public service and politics for show.”

Sharjeel Memon also rejected the idea of taking breaks or holidays when the nation was in distress. “The people are suffering, and we take holidays? We never wait for holidays to serve our people. Whether it’s Sunday or any other day, we are among them, working to address their problems,” he asserted.

He advised the Punjab government to shift its focus from self-promotion to actual relief efforts. “The people of Punjab are aware that nothing real is being done in their name—only politics and photo sessions. They deserve sincerity, not spectacle,” he concluded.

Memon reaffirmed Sindh’s commitment to standing by flood-affected families, emphasizing that genuine relief efforts must rise above political divisions and party interests to bring real change to the lives of those who have suffered.
