The Central Development Working Party (CDWP) has approved the revised PC-I of 34.5 MW Harpo Hydro Power Project. The total cost of the project is Rs 34.34 billion. The EUR 70 million is being financed by the German development bank KfW and the French development agency AFD. This project will provide a sustainable solution to the long-standing and energy crisis of the Baltistan region and will put the region on a new path of development and prosperity.

Special Assistant to the Government of Gilgit-Baltistan on Information, Iman Shah, describing the approval of the project as the result of the sincere efforts of the leadership and government of Chief Minister Gilgit-Baltistan, said that the Harpo Hydropower Project will not only ensure the supply of electricity. But it will also play an important role in employment, economy and infrastructure development. This project will be a local resource-based, environment-friendly and sustainable source of energy that will benefit not only domestic consumers but also consumers. Rather, educational institutions, health centres and business sectors will also develop.

Iman Shah said the milestone would not have been possible without the support of the federal government, KfW, AFD and other partners. We are grateful to all of these organizations. Who contributed for a better future of Gilgit-Baltistan. He said that this project is a clear proof that Gilgit-Baltistan is no longer a neglected region but has joined the stream of national development. He said that keeping in mind the energy needs of the area, our government is giving priority to all such projects which will promote self-sufficiency at the local level and provide employment opportunities to the youth. The Harpo Hydropower Project will provide stable electricity to thousands of households in Skardu and surrounding areas, which will eliminate severe power shortages during the winter months.

The Special Assistant on Information also thanked the Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan, whose constant monitoring and interest led to the approval of this important project. He said that the Chief Minister has always kept the public interest in mind and continued to move forward with vigorous lobbying and strategy for development projects.

The gilgit -Baltistan government congratulates the people on this historic achievement and reiterates its commitment to continue all such initiatives for the development, self-reliance and prosperity of the region which will have a lasting impact.
