Mr. Hayat has worked for the Federal Investigation Agency before.

Mr. Ansari has been replaced just a few weeks after one of the worst terrorist attacks in KP’s capital, Peshawar, which killed approximately 87 people in the Police Lines.

The notification states that the former IGP must report to the Establishment Division.

The notification that was distributed by the Establishment Division reads, “With the approval of the Federal Government, Mr. Akhtar Hayat, a BS-21 Officer of Police Service of Pakistan, presently serving in Federal investigation Agency (FIA), under Interior Division, is transferred and posted as Provincial Police Officer (PPG), Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, under Section 10 of the Civil Servants Act, 1973, with immediate effect and until further orders.”

Mr. Ansari had previously stated that it was impossible to rule out a terrorism threat during the province’s upcoming elections.

Prior to the elections in the province, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah and Governor of KP Haji Ghulam Ali had also voiced concerns regarding the security situation in KP.

Within 90 days of the dissolution of the provincial assembly, the polls must be returned.

Imran Khan, chairman of the PTI, has made it clear that, in accordance with the Constitution, his party wants elections to take place within 90 days, and that any delay would not be tolerated.
