Iga Swiatek reclaims world number one ranking after winning WTA Finals

Poland’s Iga Swiatek won the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) final in Cancun on Monday, beating United States’ Jessica Pagola 6-1 6-0, Belarus ends the season by regaining its world number one ranking from Arina Sabalinka.

In a match postponed for a day due to rain، Poole defeated Pagola five times and won his first WTA Finals title by winning the last 11 games in a 59-minute slaughter.

“I want to thank my team who have been with me throughout the season,” Svetk said during the trophy ceremony.

“We’ve had a lot of ups and downs but it’s definitely up, and we’ll have a lot more if we keep working like this.”

He also thanked the fans who endured countless rain delays and strong winds during the event in the coastal Mexican resort town.

“Thank you, logo, for coming and being happy for us, you really made it special,” he said. “Thank you to all the Polish flags and Polish people who are coming to every tournament and from many countries. Every year I think I have more support.”

Sweetik, who won the China Open last month, ended the season with an 11-match winning streak and will end the year in the top position for the second year in a row, After losing position to Sabalinka after the US Open.

The 22-year-old Sweetick has amassed six of his career’s total 17 titles this season. Reuters reported that he retained the crown of the French Open in June to lift his fourth Grand Slam trophy.

The 29-year-old Pegula, who was struggling on his cervix and did not match Sweetick’s energy level, was kind to the defeat.

“Congratulations on finishing Year Number One and winning this tournament, it’s really incredible,” he said.

“You keep pushing me to be a better player and I appreciate that aspect. I wish I could do better today but sometimes it doesn’t.”
