Over 100,000 labourers jobless as power looms shut down
In a sign of the worsening economic crisis in the country, 30 percent of power loom industries in Faisalabad have shut down, rendering over 100,000 labourers jobless.
Due to a lack of thread, power looms have been unable to function, requiring Muhammad Sarwar and other daily wage workers in Faisalabad to continue working without pay for several days. There is no longer any shopkeeper willing to lend him groceries.
It is extremely challenging to make ends meet. I worry that my children will starve at home. There is no work because the industry is closed, according to Sarwar.
The sudden rise in the value of the dollar led to a 30% increase in the cost of thread, which in turn caused over 80,000 power looms to be turned off.
Not only is Sarwar the only one. He is one of the more than 100,000 laborers at home who are starving.
We owe between Rs18,000 and Rs20,000. We are unable to provide our children with food due to the difficulty of the situation. The children are ill and starving, and Sarwar’s wife was displeased.
As exports stopped, one shift of workers, according to textile industrialists, was eliminated.
